What counts as a loft here
“Loft” gets used loosely. In San Diego it usually means one of four genuinely different things, and they suit genuinely different people.
Brick, timber and concrete that used to be something else. Real ceiling height, real column grids, floor plans that run large. You buy character and volume, and you accept that an old building has opinions about where the plumbing goes.
Street-entry space zoned to let you run a business under the same roof you sleep in. If clients show up in person, this is the one — and the zoning language is worth reading before you sign.
Built new as lofts in the 2000s: open plans, exposed ducting, big glass, modern building systems. Less romance than a conversion, far fewer surprises.
A high-rise condo with loft geometry — open plan, tall glass, no interior hallway. You trade industrial bones for the view and the elevator.
